Pack4Trips

Pack4Trips is a quick and easy to use packing list that allows you to create list templates for trips of different types so when you have a new trip coming up you don’t need to start your list from scratch or use one that contains items that you won’t need.

You create a list from your own templates build to your requirements, and off you go. New templates can build on previous ones so you don’t need to start from scratch each time, and you can add in your own items and categories to your hearts content.

Instructions for use

The app has some initial data in it, just to give you an example of the sort of thing that you can do, but feel free to add and remove from it as you wish.

Terms

Here are the terms that are used in the app.

  • Trip – This is a planned trip with a date, and a list of items that you want to pack for the trip.
  • Template – This is a list of items that you can create based on different types of trips that you want to take, e.g. A short list for a weekend break, or a longer list for a week in the Sun.
  • Item – This is the individual item that makes up the list, e.g. Shirts. Items can be assigned to hand luggage.
  • Category – Items are grouped by category, for example Clothes, documents etc. Each category also has an emoji assigned to it.

You have full control to add, edit and delete any of the above within the app.

You can create a trip based off of a template, and then add or remove items from it without affecting the template.

Screens

Screen: Upcoming Trips

This is your start screen. Here all of your upcoming trips are listed, showing the date and the number of days until the trip.

At the bottom of the screen there is the + button that allows you to add in a new trip. When you press this button you will be able to give the trip a name, as well as select a template, or no template and then create the new list. If you change your mind and don’t want to create a trip, just click off the dialog.

If you click on a trip then it will take you to the packing list for that trip.

There is a + button that allows you to add more items to the list. If you click on it you can enter the number of the item, and also pick the item from the list. If the item is not in the list, then you can press the first item in the list, which is Add new item, which will take you to the Items/Categories screen where you can add new items. You can also click the checkbox to say that you want the item to go in hand luggage.

Screen: Template Items

This screen is very similar to the trip list, but it does not have a checkbox next to the items, as you are just selecting the ones that are going to be in the template, not actually packing for a trip.

At the bottom of the screen is the plus button where you can select items that you want to add to the template, as well as how many you want to add, and whether they should be in hand luggage. Again, if an item isn’t in the list, then you can press the Add new item button to go to the Items/Categories screen to add one.

The menu has the following items

  • Edit template – This allows you to edit the items in the template. Press the Done button once you have finished editing.
  • Delete template – This allows you to delete a template.

Screen: Items and Categories

This screen has two tabs. The first allows you to add/edit items and the second allows you to add/edit categories.

Items tab

You can add a new item by entering the name of the item in the item name field, and then by selecting a category from the list for it. Then press the Add Item button. If you select an item from the list, then you can edit that item, and save it.

If you have an item selected (showing in the top) and you want to create a new item, then you need to press the New item button to clear the item. If you just delete the name and change the category, then it will rename and recategorize the existing item.

At the end of each item in the list is a red delete button. Note that you can only delete an item if it is not currently used in any templates or lists.

Categories tab

On the categories tab you can create/edit categories.

If you select a category from the list it will fill in the details of the category at the top. Then you can edit the name of category, and if you tap on the emoji field it will give you an emoji picker that will allow you to pick a new emoji for that category.

You also have the delete button here, which you press to delete the category. Note that you can only delete a category if it does not have any items in the category.

On the right hand end of the categories is a grab bar that allows you to move the category. The order that you put the categories in here is the order that they appear on the packing screen.

As with the Items tab, if you have a category selected, and want to create a new one, then you need to press the New category button before you create it.
